PROPORTIONAL COUNTER RESOLUTION

The present state of the theory of proportional counter resolution is reviewed. In any attempt to achieve the ultimate resolution indicated by present theories it is shown that anode wire uniformity is a critical factor and that window effects are of litte importance. Typical wire finish has been examined and improved wire used to obtain resolutions for a 90% argon, 10% methane gas mixture better than any previously published results in the 0.2-10 keV X-ray energy region. Our results are in agreement with the lower limit set by present theories which also agree with the somewhat arbitrary lower limit set by Mulvey and Campbell16). © 1968.
