摘要
This essay begins with a consideration of the multiple objectives of science to determine how six early presidents of this association positioned themselves. I review their presidential addresses and compare their written words with how they actually behaved as citizens of the discipline and of the larger community. Based on these comparisons I assess our obligations for action, and consider the future of the SSSP.
