Although there is a great dispute over which year, 2000 or 2001, is the start of the 21st century, the new century is just close at hand. What would the new century look like? Different people have different speculations. In a demographic perspective, the replacement of the population is an endless process or generally "sustainable". The population of China has its unique past and present, and will have a fascinating future. History now provides us an unprecedented opportunity to look backward and forward and forge ahead into the future. However, when looking at the population problems in China, the happiness of the new millennium is mixed with calm considerations and deep worries. The population of China together with the population problems are in a great transition, what will happen and what do the changes mean to us? These are the great concerns of the government and academic circles, and also are the topics to which this issue of population and Development Forum is contributed.
