IT WAS HYPOTHESIZED THAT DIFFERENCES IN THE EFFECTS OF OBSERVATION AND LABELING PREDIFFERENTIATION TRAINING ON RECOGNITION PERFORMANCE MAY DEPEND ON THE EASE WITH WHICH SS ATTACH IMPLICIT VERBAL RESPONSES TO THE STIMULI DURING PRETRAINING. 90 COLLEGE STUDENTS WERE GIVEN A MULTIPLE-SHAPE RECOGNITION TEST FOLLOWING EITHER OBSERVATION OR LABELING PRETRAINING. PRIOR TO THIS SEQUENCE, SS WERE GIVEN A PAIRED-ASSOCIATE TASK DESIGNED TO INCREASE THEIR TENDENCY TO LABEL IMPLICITLY DURING SUBSEQUENT OBSERVATION TRAINING. GROUPS GIVEN IMPLICIT-RESPONSE TRAINING SHOWED RECOGNITION PERFORMANCE SUPERIOR TO THOSE WHO DID NOT RECEIVE THIS TRAINING. THE RESULTS INDICATE THE IMPORTANCE OF S- AS WELL AS E-SUPPLIED LABELS IN THE TRANSFER OF STIMULUS PREDIFFERENTIATION.
