:
Contrary to a previous report, messenger RNA for the tryptophan operon is degraded in the 5′ - 3′ direction. The following two articles describe how pulse labelling and hybridization experiments established this. In some conditions, the degradation of individual messengers starts before their synthesis is complete. © 1969 Nature Publishing Group.
