TWO TYPES OF OPTOMOTOR RESPONSE IN DOMESTIC PIGEON

2 types of optomotor response found with optokinetic stimulation in 6 domestic pigeons were the stare and look nystagmus of Ter Braak. The 2 forms of nystagmus were most easily distinguished by procedural differences in the method of stimulus presentation. Stare nystagmus was related to the total number of contours moving within the visual field rather than to the velocity of the stimulus pattern. Look nystagmus, however, was closely related to the velocity of a single moving contour; both the average frequency and amplitude of look nystagmus increased with increases in pattern velocity.
